In the first of my new series ‘weekend decorator’ I’m featuring what is probably the most under utilised surface in your home, one that you can turn into a real design statement.

Traditionally the humble staircase was just seen as a functional way to move from one floor to the next, often covered in carpet or a wood stain. Here are 7 ideas to inspire you to create a personalised design statement, in just one weekend.

    These pictures are gorgeous.

I love little bits of decoration and detail in unexpected places and these are just perfect for that.

My favourite is probably the bookshelves.

Yes it’s a simple way to add decoration and a bit of fun in the most unexpected of places! It’s an innovative way to store your books. I think my favourite is the chalk board, appealing to my fun, playful side.

        Hi Karen

Once again you have shared with us all a real gem. Stairs are so often overlooked as just a connecting space to take us to rooms where all teh care and attention to design are carefully considered. I will never look at a staircase in the same way again.

Hi Janet, I feel the same way. Every stair case I look at now I can just see the endless creative opportunities to ‘dress them up’!

I love these! The books shelves are great, and although I love the chalk board, having had a large one in my last house, the dust drove me crazy. I would have to be the quotes for me, I would really go to town with my Pearls of Wisdom!

That’s a very good point about the chalk dust. Like a lot of creative ideas it’s usually a tug between function, practicality and design.
