Introduction to Colour Psychology

Karen Haller 01

Delve Deeper into the
foundations of Colour Psychology

Picture this, I'm at college, sitting at the table one evening surrounded by piles of teal blue felt, luscious chocolate brown ribbons and feathers. I was nearing the completion of my Advanced Millinery course and making one of my final hats. To get the creative juices flowing I started fiddling with the various materials and suddenly realised “gosh it's not making hats that's exciting me, it's the colours!”

It was an epiphany moment and one that took my life in a totally new direction.

From that moment I wanted, no needed, to learn everything I could about colour and why even the exposure to those colours on my table sparked such a strong emotional reaction.

My initial excitement quickly turned to frustration as I discovered that while I loved studying traditional colour theory it didn't go far enough. In fact, what was available only scratched the surface.

There had to be more to colour than just the colour wheel, right?

That was 20 years ago.

This led me on a different path where I had to be proactive and seek out specialists from around the world to further my colour knowledge which is how I finally was introduced to the field of Applied Colour Psychology.

Between then and now I've taken a broad and varied look at how we use colour in our worlds and the effects it has on how we feel and behave. I researched, studied and worked in both creative and scientific realms such as interior design and child psychology which has led me to where I am today.

An leading expert in Applied Colour Psychology offering design professionals, like you, the opportunity to tap into my unique background and experience.

I have built a career in a specialist area that many designers never knew existed. But that is rapidly changing as I've been proving over and over again working internationally with clients such as Dulux, Dove, B&Q, BASF, Unilever and Farrow & Ball.

There is no one else doing quite what I do.

I realise that's a big claim. There are others who take a therapeutic or even a spiritual approach to colour but my approach is different.

The work I do is practical, grounded and probably most importantly is backed by scientific theory and study. My approach to teaching and mentoring colour is also highly structured which means the designers and businesses I work with are able to implement the emotional power of colour to elicit specific results – real world results.

That's my story, what's your colour story going to be?

Would delving deeper into the world of colour enhance your results?

Are you already sensing there are more possibilities and opportunities to explore?

Where do you go from here?

The Introduction to Colour Psychology Course
for industry professionals would be a great place to start.

Although this course is part of my larger 6-month Applied Colour Psychology Mentoring Programme it gives such a solid foundation in the basics of colour psychology, I've designed it be a fully standalone course in its own right.

It's one of my signature offerings that is structured to be affordable and easily fits within your schedule.

You will discover how easy it is to start using colour psychology and how offering this additional service to your clients can help you become a leader in your field.

For example, do you know

  • The three distinct ways we relate to colour and why they cause confusion?

  • The psychological meaning behind the 11 main colours, their tonal variations and why clients react to them the way they do?

  • The concepts of psychological primaries in creating behaviours in people within an environment?

  • Why your client choses (or rejects) certain colours and how to explain how their choices will impact the way they think, feel and behave in their space their thoughts, feelings and behaviours?

  • Why there's no such thing as a neutral colour?

  • Or how about why the trend for adding 'pops of colour' is likely to be plastering over, or even exaggerating an underlying problem?

Colour Psychology is springing
to the forefront of design

Increasingly designers and colour professionals are realising colour psychology backs up their intuition with logic and the rationale to understand their own and their clients' colour choices.

These results include:

  • increasing well-being in the home and in healthcare environments

  • promoting positive behaviour in the workplace

  • and for business clients colour psychology aids in attracting ideal customers and making those all-important sales.

And what's even more exciting for you is that training in colour psychology will help you to see that rather than being an afterthought or visual design feature, colour is actually at the very core of amazing design - not to mention happy clients and customers.

Is this course for you?

  • Are you a designer working with: interiors, textiles, product design, branding, graphic design, architecture, retail or healthcare?

  • Are you curious about colour psychology?

  • Want to upskill on your current colour knowledge?

  • Do you want to communicate confidently with clients about colour?

  • Up till now haven't had the time or the finance to invest in a full course?

  • Do you aspire to be a leader in your industry?

  • Are you tired of your clients saying no to whatever you show them and not understanding why?

If you're like most creative people you have an intuitive feel for colour. Yet, there will be times when a colour palette, a scheme, the personality of the brand just isn't doesn't seem to come together and you don't know why.

This course will help you to start...

  • Having more meaningful discussions around colour choices and decisions instead of endless subjective debates

  • Using logical, scientifically based, rationale to back up your colour decisions

  • Understanding some of the ways that a brand can send mix messages through colour in their marketing, interiors and products

  • Analysing your clients’ colour choices and the meaning behind their preferences

  • Making informed decisions on whether a current colour trend is right for you, your business or your client.

This course isn't for you if you are

  • Expecting instant results without putting the effort in.

  • Looking for some quick fix

  • Looking for a cookie cutter solution

  • If you have a know it all attitude. Learning something new works best with an open mind.

This isn't your run-of-the-mill "green means..." and "yellow means..." programme. While it is an introduction, there is a lot of detail that I'll be sharing about colour not taught in any traditional colour course. As with any programme course I can give you the information, exercises, activities on how you can apply it to your design work – but only you can actually do it.

What’s Your Favourite Colour?

Why do we have colours we favour or reject? What do they really say about you (or your clients)? Delve deep into how we choose and connect to colour. Explore the most FAQ’s by clients on their fears and resistance and how you can help expand their colour choices.

Clearing up the colour confusion

Clear the confusion between colour psychology, colour symbolism and colour preference. Further uncover your clients' fears and resistance and learn what to do if they insist on using a colour that doesn't work with the scheme they have asked you to create.

The evolution of colour psychology

Colour psychology is not new. It’s been evolving for thousands of years. Learn about the early pioneers and how their knowledge and discoveries have developed into where we are today.

Psychological primaries

Discover the psychological primaries and how they directly affect behaviour. This video prepares you for understanding the psychological meanings of the 11 main colours as detailed in videos 6 and 7.

Psychology of the 11main colours - Part 1

This video explores the archetype psychological traits of these first 5 colours. You'll look at meaning and most importantly, context.

Also discover why there's no such thing as a neutral colour and why the trend for 'pops of colour' may well be plastering over, or even exaggerating an underlying problem.
